First year students sample all subjects during their first year in Coláiste Treasa . The core subjects Irish, English, Maths as well as PE, Religion, SPHE, CSPE, and Science are studied for the entire school year.
They also “sample” the following subjects: Engineering, Wood Technology, Graphics, Music, Home Economics, Visual Art, Geography French, German and Business studies. The idea behind this initiative is that each student will get to experience the different subjects on offer. It will enable them to make an informed decision when choosing subjects for the Junior Cycle.
As part of the first year programme all first year students are paired with a 5th year student. This is an internationally recognised youth mentoring system known as “Big Brother, Big Sister”. It has been in place for many years and helps first years settle into their new environment.
To help students adjust to their new surroundings, we also organise a Road Running League. It starts on the first week of the first term and takes place at lunch time for four weeks. All students are expected to take part as it is very beneficial from a social and fitness viewpoint. Running continues on two days a week for the duration of the school year.
Throughout the year many activities are arranged for the first year pupils. There are many different extra curricular activities such as, Running, Football, Hurling, Basketball, Badminton,Young Scientist, Robotics and Choir. These usually take place at lunch time but on occasion they may take place after school.
Various workshops focusing on Anti-bullying, Mental well being, Health awareness, to name but a few, are arranged for the students throughout the year.
To address any fears or concerns that first year parents may have, especially during the initial settling in period, an information night is held on the 3rd week of September. (This will be dependant on advice from the health authorities regarding the Covid 19 Pandemic)
A first year student from each class group is elected to represent their class on the Student Council.
A Parent teacher meeting for first years is held in January. (This will be dependant on advice from the health authorities regarding the Covid 19 Pandemic)
The First Year, Year Head, Ms. Eileen Cronin is available to talk to the students about any concerns they may have throughout the year.
A stationery pack is available to order from the school at an approximate cost of €80. This pack will include all the students stationery needs for the year ahead.
